Bird Watching Pavilion
2020
A beautiful shelter for people to enjoy bird watching and the view of Waitematā Harbour.
Orangihina wetland, Auckland
Orangihina park is located on Te Atatū Peninsula, western of Waitematā Harbour. Orangihina park encompasses grassland, salt marsh, wetland, indigenous and exotic forest and scrub. The significant feature is that the coastline contains extensive high-tidal sandflats, mangroves, a prominent shell bank with healthy sedge, rush and glasswort salt marsh on the shoreline. The intertidal area is a major wading bird feeding ground. The brown colour region is the area that the high tide would flood.

I chose here because it is the edge of this
intertidal area. When the tide goes down, many waders such as dotterel, godwit, lesser knot and wrybill would be attracted to
come here to forage. The shelter could be hidden in the vegetation.
Concept
- Choosing at the edge of the high tide
- Targeting the watching of birds : Waders
- Designing a lower shelter rather than a tower.
- Camouflaging in the vegetation
- Creating a curved shape to merge into the surroundings
